Salford Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1947 by the late Joseph Needham, with the support of freelance string players. Today, it remains the only amateur symphony orchestra serving the Salford area, as the city celebrates 100 years in its own right in 2026.

​Our leader is Jon Henderson, and we are supported by a number of highly qualified and experienced conductors who rehearse and perform with us, including Marco Giudici, Catherine Stonham, and Felicity Cliffe.
